Shijing, nº 42

Modesta es la doncella
      modesta y bella.

Junto al postigo al pie
      del muro espero.
¿Dónde se halla mi amada?
      Aún no la veo.
La cabeza me rasco,
      estoy perplejo.

Modesta es la doncella
      modesta y bella.

Colorada es la flauta
      que me presenta.
Colorada y brillante
      flauta bermeja.
Me alegro y me deleito
      en tu belleza.

Me ha traído del bosque
      flores y tallos.
Sois en verdad bellos,
      bellos y raros.
Pero no sois tan bellos
      por separado.
Es bella la doncella
      que os ha enviado.

O, como dice el P. Elorduy:

The Gentle Maiden

How pretty is the gentle maiden!
At the tower of the city wall she should be waiting.
I love her but I cannot see her;
I scratch my head while anxiously pacing.

The gentle maiden: how lovely is she!
This red pipe she gave to me.
O red pipe, with lustre bright,
Your beauty gives me great delight.

From the pasture she sent me her plight-
a tender shoot, beautiful and rare.
Yet it's not your beauty that gives me delight,
But she who sent you, so true and fair!
